Reno McCarthy is trouble with a capital "T." A hard-nosed reporter and recent killer, his past is about one step away from catching up with him. And he doesn't seem to notice.
When Reno takes a call about a possible homicide in the suburbs, he has no idea that this story may very well be the last story of his life! Seventeen-year old Trey Hayden is found dead, shot to death, in his rich parent's home and rather than speedily trying to find his murderer, the local police seem to be more interested in covering up, well, something. Nobody's talking, everybody's pointing fingers, and people are turning up missing and dead daily. Even though a small town, Reno knows that behind all the mayhem, supreme power of some sort is lurking.
From car explosions to crawlspaces, this mystery takes you all over Wihega County and back again. The true crime lies far deeper than the murder of the Hayden boy and what Reno risks his life trying to prove will leave you aghast at what really happens behind closed doors - especially the expensive ones. Like Emerson says and Cummings quotes - "Every Secret Crime Has It's Reporter."

I love a good, fast-paced mystery and Every Secret Crime didn't let me down! When I finally reached the finish line of this story I felt like I was physically bent at the knees, panting for breath! I can't believe so much happened, so much was ruined and rectified, in just a few days time!
Reno McCarthy is definitely a character you love to hate. He's technically "one of the good guys" but his soul is tortured over his recent past and he behaves just like a man that doesn't know how to move on. He shuns his loved ones, pounds dash boards in anger over nothing, and absolutely does NOT listen to his superiors. He leaves tension and calamity in his wake, wherever he goes.
And still...still I rooted for him! Cummings masterfully creates his main character so that his readers personally and painfully feel each struggle Reno endures. His moments of triumph and good investigative journalism are celebrated as our own and his forays into the darker side of his personality and the things he's done to shape his career make us feel just as slimy. All-in-all, this is a character you are going to care about.
Of course I don't want to give away the farm so suffice to say that this is a mystery behind the mystery kind of story which always leaves room for a good twisty ending. Best part is, Cummings gives you a double twist so just when you think you've figured it out, he's off and running in a different direction. When you sit down to read this book, be sure you have enough time to finish because I promise you won't want to put it down!

- How often is the relationship between law enforcement and the media strained and uncomfortable? Which side is at fault for this?
- Is Reno's attitude toward Vinnie warranted or is he being too harsh?
- Should anyone, but especially people involved with a murder case, become romantically involved?
